I received the following letter from another academic over the weekend, describing the anti-war consensus of her colleagues. We had a brief back-and-forth about why her experience may be different from some other academics (maybe geographic location, maybe age of colleagues, maybe something else). I obviously do not have quantitative evidence regarding academics’ beliefs, and it’s clear that many who oppose the war are afraid to speak out openly, so I think it’s important to share the variety of perspectives coming through.

Here is the English translation of the letter, with some details redacted to preserve anonymity. It is clear that academics in Russia opposed to this war are also victims here and are suffering.

Dear Tatyana,

I am a [academic specialty] in Russia. I read your message about opinions of Russian colleagues in the scientific community.

I was surprised that opinions are polarized. I would like to tell you about my experience of “polling” my colleagues in our institute in Russia, because in my environment all the scientists are categorically against the war in Ukraine.

A few examples.

1. My husband’s mom is in Ukraine, in one of the cities to which the frontline is moving closer and closer. It was unbearably painful and shameful for my husband to have to explain to the children why their grandmother will be living in a basement, why Russian soldiers from our country are shooting in the country where their Russian grandmother resides. We started thinking about leaving the country.
2. A young female [academic position]. After the war started she “had a breakdown”. Her therapist helped her a lot, he…. is from Kiev (!). She is depressed, cries, wants to quit science in order to not pay taxes or to leave Russia. She has changed her mind about defending her prepared doctoral thesis.
3. One of our professors who holds an administrative position attended a protest. In the beginning we had a poster “no to war” hanging in the hallway of the institute.
4. A [academic specialty] friend (from another institute) and her husband, a [another academic specialty], dream that when the war is over they will go to work in Ukrainian institutes to lift science and restore relations between our peoples.

A great number of scientists signed an open letter against the war, but many were afraid to do that. No one went to the protest, because it’s pointless and dangerous, people get immediately arrested.

In the first 2 weeks of the war, [X] young scientists from our floor, including [Y] women with children, left Russia because of political disagreement.

We are feeling pain and shame and are in deep depression from our powerlessness.

Уважаемая Татьяна,

Я […] в России. Прочитала Ваше сообщение по мнению российских ученых коллег.

Удивилась, что мнения полярные. Я хотела бы Вам рассказать о своем опыте “опроса” коллег в нашем институте в России, так как все мое окружение ученых категорически против войны в Украине.

Несколько примеров.

1. У мужа мама в Украине, в одном из городов, к которому все ближе движется фронт. Ему было невыносимо больно и стыдно объяснить детям, почему бабушка будет жить в подвале, почему русские солдаты нашей страны стреляют в стране, где живет их русская бабушка. Мы задумались о том, чтобы уехать из страны.
2. Молодая женщина […]. После начала войны “случилась истерика”. Ей очень помог ее психолог, он…. из Киева (!). Она находится в депресии, плачет, хотет бросить науку, чтобы не платить налоги или уехать из России. Передумала защизать написанную докторскую.
3. На митинге был один из наших профессоров, занимающих административную должность. В первые дни в холле института висел плакат “нет войне”.
4. Подруга […] (другой институт) и ее муж […] мечтают, что когда закончится война, они поедут работать в украинские институты поднимать науку и восстанавливать отношение между нашими народами.

Очень многие ученые подписали открытое письмо против войны, но многие просто побоялись. На митинг никто не пошел, поскольку это бесполезно и опасно, сразу арестовывают.

За первые 2 недели войны из-за несогласия с политикой из России уехали […] молодых ученых с нашего этажа, в том числе […] женщины с детьми.

Мы чувуствуем боль и стыд, находимся в глубокой депрессии из-за бессилия.
