Unfortunately, I’m receiving more and more evidence that a non-trivial share of academics in Russian universities support the war Russia is waging in Ukraine. To start with more anecdotal evidence, here is an excerpt from a reply that another US academic received in response to our letter campaign to academics in Russia. I’ve received quite a few similar replies, but what stands out about this one is that this particular academic said that he used to be a Ukrainian citizen and at one point lived in the UK for a long period of time. Here’s what he said about the war (original Russian at the end of this post):

“As a resident of the Russian Federation (Crimea, Sevastopol) I understand that sooner or later the USA will come to my home (as they came to Yugoslavia-Iraq-Libya-Syria) with a war – it’s just a matter of time. And that is why I support this special operation in Ukraine – it is not a war with Ukrainians, it is a preventive form of a hint to the US and Europe – if you do not recognize Russia’s sovereignty and its national interests – you will be destroyed along with us. While we can afford such a tone, because we have a military advantage, in 5-10 years we will no longer have this advantage. And these words of mine are supported by an absolute majority of Russians.”

What’s particularly scary about this viewpoint is that it hints at a broader confrontation with the West than just war in Ukraine and a readiness to self-destruct for this “cause”.

Another academic in Russia emailed me a letter circulating in his/her university (thanks to a friend for translating the letter & email!). First I reproduce part of the email accompanying the letter. The academic later told me that the number of signatures has now reached 600 and that s/he has seen no pressure applied to sign the letter:

“Tanya, hello!

Today the dean of the faculty sent out a letter with a link to a google resource, adding that no one is forcing anyone…

I thought they had organized a letter against the war.

When I opened it, I saw 500 signatures so far. What do you think the petition was for? Look at the attached (the world should know its heroes).

No comment…”

Address to the President of the Russian Federation from the staff of St. Petersburg State University

Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich!

At this difficult time you and our country, we are writing to you, a graduate of our University, with words of sincere support. We understand what a difficult and momentous decision you have had to make, and we wholeheartedly approve of it, realizing that you had no other choice.

The voices of “pacifists”, who for many years ignored the ongoing war, the voices “for peace” and against the government, are ringing out loudly in our society. Unfortunately, this has happened more than once in our history. All the wars that Russia lost, Russia to itself because of internal disorder. In 1854, when the European coalition surrounded the empire from all around, at that time the Russian educated audience toasted champagne to our defeat. And so it was in 1905, when many opposition figures wished Russia to be defeated in the war with Japan because victory would have strengthened the Nicholas regime, which they hated. Will we really make the same mistake again?

At historical moments of crisis, society must unite. It is unacceptable to take actions that lead to division. Unity should not be reflected in sympathy for extremes, which we see in a rapidly polarizing society, but in an understanding of national interests, in unwavering adherence to them. Calmness and a balanced and rational assessment of the situation must now become the basis of all our actions.

A realistic view of the current situation in world politics makes us certain that the Russian government and army are not marching against the brotherly Ukrainian people but are defending not only the national security of Russia, but also the security of the entire world.

We deeply mourn all victims of the conflict that has been going on in Ukraine for 8 years now and hope for a speedy end to it. We express our support to your policy aimed at demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, establishment of peace and restoration of friendly relations between the brotherly peoples of Ukraine and Russia!

Another pro-war letter, signed by 185 rectors (essentially, heads) of Russian universities is here. It’s a little milder than the letter above, but not by much. В это трудное для Вас и для всей нашей страны время обращаемся к Вам, выпускнику нашего Университета, со словами искренней поддержки. Мы понимаем, какое непростое и судьбоносное решение Вы должны были принять, и всецело одобряем его, осознавая, что другого выбора у Вас уже не оставалось.

В нашем обществе сейчас громко зазвучали голоса «пацифистов», много лет не замечавших идущей войны, голоса «за мир» и против Правительства. Так, к сожалению, не раз случалось в нашей истории. Все проигранные Россией войны она проиграла сама себе из-за внутреннего неустройства. В 1854 году, когда европейская коалиция окружила империю со всех сторон, в это время русская образованная публика пила шампанское за наши поражения. Так было и в 1905 году, когда многие оппозиционные деятели желали России поражения в войне с Японией, победа в которой укрепила бы ненавистный им николаевский режим. Неужели мы снова наступим на те же самые грабли?…

В кризисные моменты истории общество должно сплотиться. Недопустимо совершать действия, ведущие к расколу. Единство должно находить отражение не в сочувствии крайностям, которые мы можем наблюдать в стремительно поляризующемся обществе, а в адекватном понимании общенациональных интересов, в неуклонном следовании им. Спокойствие, взвешенная и рациональная оценка ситуации должны стать сейчас основой всех наших действий.

Реалистичный взгляд на современную ситуацию в мировой политике позволяет нам быть уверенными в том, что российское правительство и армия не выступают против братского украинского народа, а защищают не только национальную безопасность России, но и безопасность всего мира.

Мы глубоко скорбим обо всех жертвах конфликта, уже 8 лет продолжающегося на территории Украины, и надеемся на скорейшее его завершение.
